about

'Cataclysmic Events' feels like a cinematic experience. Listeners are taken on a sonic road trip across prehistoric landscapes, past erupting volcanoes, and turbulent seas. Creating a dark and gloomy atmosphere of stress and despair with glimpses of hope on the horizon, the six tracks of 'Cataclysmic Events' might evoke associative images in one's mind's eye. During production, Vertex Loop envisioned imaginary soundtracks of ancient disasters to help him express his inner conflicts through sound in a unique way, oscillating between aggression, amazement, brutality, and beauty.

Vertex Loop recorded explorative sessions with modular synthesizers and electric guitars in his studio in Berlin, Neukölln. He then cut those recordings into hundreds of microsamples, freely rearranging the slices on his computer, adding effects, and reamping the emerging phrases through analog compressors. This process was repeated multiple times in order to interweave melodic fragments, drone sounds, noise, and hints of rhythm into complex formations. Vertex Loop compares his practice to painting with sonic material, gently building up dense soundscapes layer by layer, sometimes scratching the surface to reveal what's hidden underneath.

'Cataclysmic Events' marks the experimental electronic debut of Vertex Loop. It took the 39-year-old German artist, Johannes Ernst, more than a decade to find his musical identity and the courage to release his first six-track EP.

In the mid-2000s, Vertex Loop dove deep into the Berlin club scene and formed a strong connection with bass-driven dance music. He started producing house- and techno-inspired tracks but never released any. In the following years, Vertex Loop battled anxiety and depression, which caused him to drift away from music production.

The pandemic finally led Vertex Loop into a phase of personal metamorphosis. His self-doubts faded, while his musical visions began to take shape. Vertex Loop drew inspiration from artists and composers like Tim Hecker, Ben Frost, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Steve Reich. He overcame his internal blockades and let his experimental inclinations lead him to his first release, 'Cataclysmic Events'.
